Tonbo House Hakuba was originally a traditional Japanese style farm house (Kominka) built some time towards the end of the edo period (1603 to 1867) in the quiet beautiful woods of Sanosaka.
Retaining the warm and quaint features of the traditional home, Tonbo House has been lovingly renovated with modern appliances, and newly furnished to offer a moving experience to feel the fusion of the traditional and modern atmosphere.
It can comfortably accommodate up to 10 people (8+2). It has 4 x two person bedrooms plus a traditional upstairs tatami area that has two futon mattresses.
The entry way opens into a lobby area, where you are immediately given a glimpse the traditional structure of the building, with amazing 200-year-old oak beams. After this area you enter into a spacious open plan living dining area and an open kitchen.
The stylish bright red kitchen has modern appliances with an IH stove top, grill, microwave, advanced oven, fridge freezer and all the kitchen utensils you will need.
There is a large open plan living/dining area with plenty of sofa space for everyone to relax around the wood burning stove, or seated around delicious meals, on the spacious 3 meter long dining table.
The living area leads to a library and snow viewing space with a plush comfortable sofa, eames chair, two desk areas, one with large screen monitor and a printer for our guests to use.
Tonbo house has everything on the first floor, a large bathroom with a full size hinoki bathtub, as well as standing shower space, a vanity, laundry space, a separate toilet, and 4 bedrooms.
Bedroom 1 and 2 are two spacious double bedrooms with en-suite shower rooms/toilets, one with a resort style four poster king bed and another with two single beds that can be set as a king.
Bedroom 3 also has two single beds that can be set as a king, and Bedroom 4 has a sturdy bunk bed perfect for children to stay.
Another special space of the house is the attic space with a tatami area, 2 comfortable traditional futons and a close view of the traditional structural beams of the house.
The house is beautifully furnished with plenty of space for everyone to relax.
As well as the wood burning stove, the modern underfloor heating makes sure you can stay nice and toasty even on the coldest of nights, and the air-conditioners offer a comfortable stay even during the hot summer days (there is a built in duct type air-conditioner in the living dining room to keep the whole house cool and a seperate air-conditioner in the 2 en-suite bedrooms, however please note that there is no air-conditioner in the other bedrooms) .
Tonbo House has a large flat screen TV, with Apple TV, Netflix and Disney apps.
The entire house has high speed fiber linked broadband mesh WiFi, as well as integrated ethernet, perfect for staying connected with your own laptop or smartphone.
Since the house is located in the quiet woods of Sanosaka, we recommend you to come and stay with a car, and we are happy to arrange a rental car for our guests at the house up on arrival if needed.

About the rate
- minimum number of nights: 3 nights (December-March), 2 nights (April-November)
- Rate for up to 10 ppl. (children and infants included)
- 10% Sales tax is included in the rate.
- 5% Booking fee will be applied to the total accommodation cost.
- Payment method:
For bookings from December to March, payments can be made by credit card or bank transfer in your local currency (The currency will be automatically selected by your home address) by a payment system provided by Flywire, or by PayPal.
From April to November, payments can be made by credit card only. - Damage security pre-authorization:
At check-in, you will be required to sign a credit card pre-authorization form to cover the cost of any damage to the property during your stay.
Payment schedule
- From December to March, 50% of the total amount is due at the time of booking, and the remaining balance is due 30 days prior to the arrival date.
From April to November, please register your credit card details at the time of booking, and 10 days prior to the arrival date, the total amount will be charged to the registered card (If your arrival date is within 10 days, we will charge you within a few days of your booking.)
Cancellation Policy
- From December to March, 100% of paid prepayments refundable when cancelled 30 days prior to arrival date or earlier (Please note that teh booking fee is non-refundable), 0% refundable if cancelled after.
From April to November, for cancellation after 10 days prior to arrival date, there will be 100% cancellation fee.
